Geology, the scientific reasons of mysterious natural activities is not well known to us. Though many interesting features and many events are growing up every moment, we do not know the proper reasons of these. Geology let us to know about the science, hidden behind these.
Here we are going to discuss about a geological heritage of India i.e Lonar crater Lake. It is a best kept secret of Maharastra, India.
Very few of us heard of it apart from the local and occasional trekkers. It is an impact crater on Earth surface of Basaltic Rock. It was named after an Indian mythological name called ‘Lonasura’.
Scientists discovered that about 52,000 years ago an asteroid of 2 million tones crashed into the ground with a velocity of 90,000 kmph. Due to this collision the crater was created.
Geologists have enough proof of this matter. NASA and GSI looked into this matter and discovered many minerals surrounding the lake. The minerals like ‘Stishovite’, ‘Maskelynite’ are discovered here which can be only formed by hypervelocity impact. The sample of minerals of rocks of Moon gained by the Apollo mission matched with some of the minerals of the lake.
Geologists have found melted rocks in the ground of the lake, which is both alkaline and saline. The PH of water of the lake varies from >10 to 12. The tourists are shown litmas test by the guides to prove the behavior of the water. But there are some questions
- Why the water is alkaline and saline both?
- Why the water supports microorganisms which are rarely found in other places in the planet?
Any snake , fish or any other normal organisms can’t live here for it’s alkali behavior. But the interesting fact is that Ecologists have found Nitrogen fixation in the lake which indicates an ideal ecological cycle. But it is difficult to reach to the lake because it is surrounded by hills and down to the lake is slippery.
The unsolved mysteries of this lake disturbe the scientists most. We hope for a positive outcome.
